The temperate conditions during the seasons create favorable viewing conditions for mountain vistas due to clear atmospheric conditions. You will find comfortable places to stop at basic teahouses and lodges spread throughout the route. The higher you go, the more rustic facilities become, as some teahouses provide both hot showers and Western-style toilets while others have lower-end facilities.

You can traverse Annapurna Circuit trek with Poon Hill for 14 days, where you can witness remarkable sunrise views, which are widely regarded as the best in the area. Passing through Thorong La presents extraordinary difficulties because of its altitude and the strenuous physical requirements to travel this path. You must perform proper adaptation procedures before your journey because this practice helps prevent altitude illness while ensuring safety.

One of the main attractions of the trek is the traditional Manang villages, Muktinath temples, and Ghorepani settlements located among remote communities. The locals add value to trekking, exchanging cultural information about their customs and practices. During the trekking expedition, you will see remarkable sunset views across the mountain peaks. The most breathtaking sunset views appear at both locations of Ghorepani and Poon Hill, where sunlight shines against the snowy peaks.

The Annapurna Circuit with Poon Hill trek is an exceptional travel experience that delivers perfect unity between excitement and cultural exploration with nature's beauty. The trek leads you through diverse terrain, including leafy forests, followed by delightful villages until it reaches its destination of towering snowy peaks. The Annapurna region trek provides unique delights that accommodate all kinds of adventurers who desire high mountain passes, spiritual encounters, and spectacular mountain views.

How does the Annapurna Circuit with Poonhill Trek start and end?

The 14-day Annapurna Circuit with PoonHill Trek starts with a drive from Kathmandu to Birethanti and ends with a drive/ fly back to Kathmandu. The trek starts with a picturesque vehicle journey to Dharapani, where you'll pass through multiple attractive villages, such as Chame and Pisang, until reaching the stunning Manang Valley. After spending an acclimatization day in Manang to adjust to high elevations, the trail extends through Yak Kharka to Thorang High Camp before crossing the well-known Thorang La Pass for the destination at Muktinath. You will visit Tatopani, after which you will continue to Ghorepani for Poonhill peak viewing and finish at Ullerii.

The Annapurna Circuit Trek presents trail conditions transitioning from smooth stone paths to rougher rock structures ascending at altitude. You will face difficulties in the areas surrounding Thorang La Pass because the steep slopes and adverse weather create challenging conditions, although the remarkable scenery serves as an adequate reward. You must prepare to cope with weather variability through trekking mainly because cold temperatures and powerful wind gusts frequently affect higher elevation points. The trekking route combines mild slopes and more demanding areas to provide climbers with engaging trekking challenges.

You will receive expert guidance from Yeti Hikes, which specializes in Annapurna region tours and provides crucial safety measures and essential advice during the entire trek. While the team handles navigation complexity and unexpected events, the Annapurna Circuit with Poonhill Trek is a life-changing adventure full of natural beauty with cultural immersion.

What is the best season for the Annapurna Circuit with Poonhill Trek?

Spring and autumn are the best seasons for the Annapurna Circuit with Poonhill Trek. The clear skies, stable trails, and mild temperatures make it the ideal time for the Annapurna Region. The spring months showcase glorious flowers alongside flowering vegetation, and the autumn brings forth refreshing mountain breezes and incredible viewpoints of the Himalayas. You can trek comfortably in the Annapurna region throughout spring and autumn since the weather conditions enable pleasant mountain exploration in these seasons.

Spring (March to May)

Normal weather conditions are perfect for trekking during this period, with temperatures ranging from cool to warm. The trekking route lights up with vibrant rhododendrons during spring, which adds additional visual charm to the impressive scenery. The Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges become easily observable because the skies remain mostly clear.

Autumn (September to November)

During the autumn months, the atmosphere remains constant throughout this period because of its clear skies, fresh air, and comforting temperatures. You will get the clearest views and can see spectacular mountain sights. During autumn, when Nepal experiences its peak trekking season, the various facilities supporting trekking activities throughout the route are fully operational to provide convenience to travelers without any difficulties.

Why is the winter and monsoon season not ideal for the Annapurna Region trek?

During wintertime, freezers emerge, especially at mountain heights where temperatures sink below zero degrees Fahrenheit. Snowfall and avalanches block the trails, creating risky trekking conditions. Very low temperatures make it challenging for the body to adjust, even though many high-altitude teahouses remain closed in such dangerous winter conditions. Rainfall during the monsoon remains heavy from June through August. The high moisture levels generate unfavorable conditions, including an enhancement of leech populations and potential bug infestations, and degrade trekking comfort.

Why is it important to avoid caffeine, alcohol, and smoking during the trek?

To guarantee safety and comfort during the Annapurna Circuit with Poonhill Trek, you must avoid caffeine, alcohol, and smoking products. Drinking energy drinks and coffee that contain caffeine leads to dehydration because it increases your need to urinate, especially in high-altitude environments. Drinking alcohol creates difficulties with acclimatization due to its oxygen-reducing blood effect, which produces lightheadedness along with headaches and elevates the chance of suffering from altitude sickness. The thin Himalayan air becomes even more challenging to breathe through when one smokes cigarettes due to their impact on both lung function and oxygen absorption.

What toilet and bathroom facilities are available during the trek?

The fundamental bathroom and toilet facilities on the Annapurna Circuit with Poonhill Trek differ based on the altitude level and the specific teahouse where you stay. The facilities on the trek operate within basic functionality compared to urban living conditions to serve the needs of trekkers. The lower-altitude camps may possess hot shower facilities, while only pit latrines and cold water for bathing are present in the higher altitudes. Having such knowledge prepares the trekkers for the trek, thus making the experience comfortable.

Toilet Facilities

Most remote areas along the Annapurna Circuit with the Poonhill Trek enable visitors to access pit-style sanitary facilities. The basic pit toilet design in remote regions consists of a ground-dug hole that gets privacy protection from surrounding wooden barriers. The areas lack running water and developed plumbing systems, so transporting toilet paper and hand sanitizer becomes essential for maintaining personal hygiene. The toilets in higher altitudes have basic facilities because many trekkers share them.

Squat toilets prevail throughout villages and the lower parts of the country, especially in local teahouses. The basic design of a squat toilet includes a platform or basin that enables users to stand in a squatting position when using it. These facilities provide slightly better comfort than pit toilets but remain without Western-style flush toilets. Carry personal toilet supplies such as wet wipes or toilet paper since some locations do not offer these amenities.

Bathroom Facilities

Showers with hot and cold water options are available at different availability levels across the trekking path. The lower altitude teahouses provide hot showers, which you can access for extra payment. Shower water is heated through a stove or solar power, but its availability depends on meteorological conditions. The higher you climb in elevation, the fewer hot shower options become available, and you will mostly encounter only cold water facilities. Most Annapurna Circuit teahouses provide cold showers, but these options have become more prevalent in higher elevations because of unreliable heating capabilities.

Itinerary of Annapurna Circuit Trek with Ghorepani Poonhill - 14 days

Day 1 : Arrival in Kathmandu and Transfer to hotel

1,400 m/4,593 ft
Welcome Dinner

After landing at Tribhuvan International Airport, Yeti Hikes will receive you and provide hotel transportation services. Spend a couple of minutes relaxing in your hotel room before you start wandering through the streets and business districts, with a particular emphasis on Thamel. Explore the bustling streets during your day before coming back to enjoy your welcome meal.

Day 2 : Drive to Dharapani via Besisahar

760 m / 2,493 ft
Breakfast+Lunch+Dinner

Besisahar to Dharapani provides travelers with their initial stretch on the Annapurna Circuit Trek. Tourists need six hours to complete the drive, during which they will witness traditional Nepali rural scenes alongside lush hills and flowing rivers. Because the roads used for exercise are occasionally uneven, it's an adventure. The Marsyangdi River will call you as you cross Bhulbhule, giving you an excellent introduction to the rural scenery and stunning vistas of the terraced farms. As you approach Syange, the road becomes narrower and broader, although generally smoother.

With only one designated track, tours of Syange are famous for its cliffs, and waterfalls have grown, although the trail becomes slick in the event of rain. Driving to Chame, a bustling little village where you can grab lunch and then take a quick break, will come next. A short road that leads up through some steep turns leads to Chame; portions of the streets are gravelly and stoney, and there is a chance of landslides. Consequently, the trail conditions deteriorate due to intense inclines and decreasing gradients. Be sure to remain composed and still because even a small mistake could be fatal.

There are both paved and mud roads on the last and remaining portion leading to Dharapani. You will spend the night in a teahouse when you get to Dharapani, a little village that is an essential stop on the Annapurna Circuit. After a long trip, it's a great place to rest and prepare for the strenuous walk.

Day 3 : Trek to Chame

2,650 m / 8,694 ft
Breakfast+Lunch+Dinner

Walking to Chame, the bustling Manang District headquarters, you will begin your adventure. Crossing more exhilarating suspension bridges that give you a perspective of the water flowing downstream makes for an exciting voyage. Remember that the path has some fantastic hot springs, like nature's sauna for hikers, after a long day of trekking. You will reach charming locations like Bagarchhap and Timang throughout the primarily mud and stone trekking. The area's notable features include pine plantations and aromatic rhododendrons, which are particularly blooming around mid-May.

When visiting Chame, you can enjoy the spectacular Annapurna Glacier site and the outstanding view of the Lamjung Himal mountains. You will find peace and healing in the natural thermal hot springs that exist within the small village. The tea shop allows you to unwind while having tea and food beverages. You will find much more in Chame than convenient resting facilities, as the location includes retail outlets, internet cafes, and portable medical facilities for tour groups.

Day 4 : Trek to Upper Pisang

3,300 m / 10,827 ft
Breakfast+Lunch+Dinner

The next step of your tour will be hiking from Chame to Upper Pisang. The track steadily and gradually rises, offering ever-wider views of the majestic snow-capped Alps. Although there are more vistas of alpine nature, the environment varies with height. Following the Marsyangdi River upstream, you will pass through Bhratang hamlet and Dhukur Pokhari, allowing you to experience and get to know the residents.

The Chame to Upper Pisang walking track is reasonably rewarding but harsh at some points with steep climbs and uneven surfaces. The air becomes thinner as you ascend higher in the sky, and alpine vegetation takes its place. There are mani walls and prayer wheels throughout the route to provide a religious element to the trip. Even though the terrain is rugged, you can hear the sound of the running water and waterfalls while hiking.

There are Upper Pisang and Lower Pisang in the village when you first arrive in Pisang. Greater Tibetan architecture can be found in the town of higher Pisang, which also contains a lovely monastery that is well worth a visit. There are good observation spots for the nearby peaks and beautiful views of the stunning surroundings from Upper Pisang. Though it is also a little developed, Lower Pisang feels cozy because of its unadulterated beauty and the way its residents treat you. You can fully engage with the welcoming culture and sample some authentic Nepali cuisine once you get to your accommodation in Upper Pisang. If you are traveling, Pisang is a lovely area to stop in because of its clear night sky and brilliant sky.

Day 5 : Trek to Manang Valley

3,540 m / 11,614 ft
Breakfast+Lunch+Dinner

Beautiful towns and farms in the Manang Valley are among the picturesque locations traversed throughout the trip from Upper Pisang to above. With breathtaking up-close views of the Annapurna chain, it is both steep and gradual, adding to the thrill. It could be very difficult in certain places because of the high cliffs and the Marsyangdi River, which runs far below. The vegetation, animals, and landscape will alternate between forests and meadows regularly, if nothing else. The trail is clear; however, it can occasionally only be one track and difficult to follow because of its stoniness.

The vegetation, animals, and landscape will alternate between forests and meadows regularly, if nothing else. The trail is clear; however, it can occasionally only be one track and difficult to follow because of its stoniness.

Along the way, you will see the monastery, which has antique Buddhist artifacts and wall murals. The snowy mountain tops, swift-moving glaciers, and countless valleys provide some of the most striking scenery.

You will reach Manang in the next few hours. It is a nice village to explore, but it is also a larger hamlet than others in the area, with enough grocery stores and facilities like hot showers.  Manang also boasts a small movie theatre, which adds to the lively nightlife and makes the place exciting for hikers. The Himalayan Rescue Association runs a clinic in the area for people concerned about acclimatization and altitude sickness.

You may find useful information and suggestions here regarding the course of treatment and prevention of altitude-related disorders. In addition to the trail's usefulness, the Manang Valley is beautiful enough to entice you to take pictures and spend a day or two taking in the spectacular, tall mountains and the beautifully rendered natural surroundings.

Day 6 : Acclimatization day at Manang

3,540 m / 11,614 ft
Breakfast+Lunch+Dinner

Today is the acclimatization day at Manang Valley. In your tea house, you can choose to relax and take a full body nap. However, Yeti Hikes recommends that you hike through the stunning valley and briefly stroll in the charming and energetic Manang Valley. Don't miss Manang Emerald Lake and Gangapurna Glacier for a stunning uphill walk!

The trails on these intermediate hikes are clear and range in difficulty from a little rocky to rough, so we advise wearing proper footwear. The Gangapurna Glacier offers visitors a breathtaking view of the ice landscape, which includes the Manang Emerald Lake, which gleams with glistening water that can create stunning mountain reflections. Most of the trails are kept up nicely, but some are narrow, perhaps only a foot or two wide and steep, adding to the thrill.

Taking a tour of the historic monasteries and traditional residences can give you a closer look at their cultures and way of life. Acclimatization days are a fun part of your journey because you are mindful of your senses, the pure mountain air, and the breathtaking scenery!

Day 7 : Trek to Yak Kharka

4,050 m / 13,287 ft
Breakfast+Lunch+Dinner

Following your departure from Manang, you will continue walking until you reach Yak Kharka, a little settlement that gives you a general idea of the Annapurna region. After a few hours, the trail's progressive steepness gives way to sweeping views of the emerald-green meadow where the yaks graze and the tall, towering mountains. The air gets thinner and there is less foliage as you ascend, making the trip more exciting. While traveling, you should pay attention to the trail's imperfections, such as the occasional sharp stone.

The hike goes through some of the area's most beautiful scenery, including moraines and alpine pastures. If you're fortunate, you may spot Himalayan Marmots or Blue Sheep (Bharal), the primary predators in this herbivorous region, on your ascent.

You will next pass through Gunsang village, a lovely village where most hikers pause to take in the splendour of the surroundings. Here, you may unwind and enjoy a fascinating up-close look at Annapurna III, Gangapurna, and Tilicho peak, which makes every walk a photographer's dream.

Your final destination is Yak Kharka, which translates to "Yak Pasture," a town encircled by rough terrain and steep peaks. Because this area is less congested, you will have a chance to talk to other passengers.

These locations provide basic but suitable lodging, and delectable meals are suggested for the weary hiker. Before advancing to more challenging climbs, the generally serene setting is ideal for relaxing and acclimating to the surroundings. Most of Yak Kharka's nightlife is spent conversing with other trekkers and warming up at the lodges. Savour your hot supper and prepare to go on your journey the next day.

Day 8 : Trek to Thorang High Camp

4,880 m / 16,010 ft
Breakfast+Lunch+Dinner

The trail has various elements, such as rough and/or extremely uneven terrain that requires careful navigation. You will be hiking upland on steep slopes with little flora, big boulders, and tiny streams. Hikers worldwide can marvel at the Annapurna range and the route's breathtaking slopes and valleys. Before making the last push to High Altitude Camp, you can choose to spend a few days acclimatizing by Thorong Phedi.

You will reach the Thorong High Camp threshold at its center prior to ascending towards Thorong La Pass. The camp witnesses continuous movement due to its many international hikers visiting at once. The few basic shelters at these facilities provide sufficient protection against outdoor elements which may be totally dissimilar from each other. Camping at Thorong High Camp means reduced nighttime options for entertainment which causes most hikers to share strategies about crossing the following pass.

An incredible view of the starry nighttime sky appears because there are no artificial lights in the area. Visitors on the Annapurna Circuit highly value Thorong High Camp for the strong camaraderie along with adventurous spirit and awe-inspiring mountain scenery that it offers. Rest well today because the upcoming day will present multiple challenging obstacles.

Day 9 : Cross Thorang La and Muktinath

3,800 m / 12,467 ft
Breakfast+Lunch+Dinner

After a hearty breakfast, you'll begin your journey to the summit of Thorong La Pass. Despite the climb's difficulty, the stunning views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountains make it worthwhile.

Although the majority of the climb is steep and can be ice and chilly, especially when winds are blowing, the breathtaking view throughout the entire area more than makes up for the difficulty. The sensation of accomplishment is immense after you reach the summit, and the Himalayas in front of you conceal the remainder of the ascent.

The primarily steep trail continues down to lower Mustang, where the vegetation and landscape tell a different narrative. You will surely experience a spiritual transformation at Muktinath's Hindu and Buddhist shrine, also known as Mukti Natha.

You have three options: ride the mule (khachkar) for relatively simple "paid" transportation, climb steps, or visit the major Muktinath Temple. The 108-spread water sprout known as "Muktidhara" represents spiritual purity. People in the area think that if you go through all 108 sprouts, the holy water will cleanse your sins and bring you freedom and serenity.

You'll have a pleasant dinner and a restful sleep in the Muktinath region! Although the hike has been fairly challenging, Muktinath's views, scenery, and devotion allow for much reflection on the fantastic adventure one has been on.

Day 10 : Drive from Muktinath to Tatopani

1,190 m / 3,904 ft
Breakfast+Lunch+Dinner

You are almost at the finish of your journey. Prepare yourself for an incredible morning journey through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Nepal. Beautiful views of the Kali Gandaki, which is believed to have significant spiritual and cultural value in the area, may be seen during the trip.

The off-road course features some difficult parts with steep curves, even though the trail is sometimes straight. However, the stunning landscape, which consists of lush valleys, shrublands, and arid inland regions, more than makes up for the difficulties.

As you descend, the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountains and several lovely villages will be visible. The terrain is varied, but it's always thrilling because of the area's breathtaking waterfalls, verdant forest, and charming farming. Your itinerary will include the modern town of Jomsom, with its busy market, and the charming village of Marpha, known for its apples.

The main attraction is the natural hot springs of Tatopani. These are the best method for reviving your muscles after adventurous but exhausting hiking days! Because of the tranquil surroundings, the hot springs are a well-liked location where you can take a bath, talk about and share your experiences, and unwind from exhaustion.

Enjoy fresh orange juice and a tranquil setting while interacting with the well-known Thakali and Magar communities. One of the nicest and final destinations on your Annapurna trip is Tatopani, which has revitalizing hot springs. Take your time and make the most of it. You have the night to yourself, hang around with other hikers, have fun, and think back on your amazing journey.

Day 11 : Trek to Ghorepani

2,860 m / 9,383 ft
Breakfast+Lunch+Dinner

The journey progresses today from Tatopani into Ghorepani, a widely recognized village across the Annapurna region. Pathway ascension passes through Sikha and Chitre villages, where the Magar ethnic population maintains their rich cultural heritage. The complete route begins with crossed-downland farms and continues into dense woodlands before touring sparse settlements where you will witness Nepalese living in their homelands. You'll encounter both stone-paved trails and forested sections on the hiking route, while rhododendron trees create beautiful landscape colors primarily in spring.

The climb to Ghorepani presents a moderate difficulty level because the altitude and steepness of the mountain slope intensify. Stone steps serve as a typical element in many trekking trails in Nepal because they appear during the final segment of the hike. The mountain views, refreshing air, and sightings of Himalayan wildlife during the journey make the strenuous journey more bearable. The excellent location at a high point gives viewers from Ghorepani an excellent sightline across the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges.

When you will reach Ghorepani, you can enjoy exploring a small marketplace that provides trekking supplies, regional handicrafts, and drinks for refreshment. Tourists stopping at this community utilize it as their base for their planned sunrise trek up Poon Hill. The lodging facilities in Ghorepani maintain heated dining spaces and fireplace amenities to make visitors cozy before their pre-dawn climb to Poon Hill, where they can see Himalayan dawn views.

Day 12 : Hike Poon Hill and trek back to Ulleri

2,860 m / 9,383 ft
Breakfast+Lunch+Dinner

The top of Poon Hill can be reached within 45 minutes to one hour through its well-maintained pathway. From the top of Poon Hill, you can see mountains like Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and Hiunchuli and Nilgiri, with the peaks lit by first-light as Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges spread brilliance across the sunrise sky. The spectacular Himalayan sunrise is what attracts numerous visitors to this viewpoint, making it a renowned attraction during the trek.

After witnessing stunning views and taking pictures, you will eat breakfast at Ghorepani before moving to Ulleri. You will go through an area of rhododendron forest and waterfall views as you walk through Tikhedhunga villages. Many travelers admire the extended section of stone-paved staircases which extend through dense forest and cultivated land in this part of the trail. You will experience an enjoyable change of environment because the descending path leads them to locations where the temperature is warmer, and vegetation becomes abundant. You will reach the pleasant village of Ulleri, which sits near the Modi Khola River banks.

Day 13 : Drive or Fly back to Kathmandu

1,400 m / 4,593 ft
Breakfast+Lunch+Dinner

You will return to Kathmandu after spending a relaxing night at Birenthanti. Your return journey can include a picturesque Prithvi Highway car route (6 to 7 hours) or you can take a domestic flight to Pokhara (25 minutes flight duration). The roadway reveals enchanting sights of farmed hills and majestic valleys and the Trishuli River thundering along the way and flying above the Himalayas grants a stunning panoramic view of this mountain range.

Upon reaching Kathmandu, you will receive a hotel transport service. You may now explore the busy streets of Thamel and browse for stores or relax at a small cafe before continuing with your day. Yeti Hikes organizes a traditional Nepali farewell dinner at a restaurant that features authentic local meals and allows participants stories about their amazing adventure.

The symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) are:

  • Headache.
  • Nausea and Vomiting.

How to prevent Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)?

The preventive measures for Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) are:

  • Proper acclimatisation is the secret to preventing AMS. You must rest properly because your body should adapt to the higher altitude.
  • Dehydration also causes AMS. To avoid dehydration, drink 3 to 4 liters of water daily, and avoid alcohol, caffeine, and smoking.
  • Eat foods high in energy, particularly carbohydrates. Even though the delicacies may not be that varied, the foods will have adequate protein and nutrition.
  • Although a pulse oximeter is included in the Yeti Hikes guide, we advise you to bring one as well to monitor your oxygen saturation levels.
  • You should be ready for oxygen supplementation in case of an emergency because your body may be deficient in oxygen.
