How does the Lower Manaslu Trek start and end?

The Lower Manaslu Trek starts with a drive from Kathmandu to Gorkha Bazaar and ends with a drive back to Kathmandu only. You'll then continue walking to Sirandanda, followed by Barpak and Larpak. The Nambai Kharka and Dhanche Danda provide ideal spots for watching stunning sunrises across the Himalayan peaks. After heading down from the Ghyampesal, you will return to Kathmandu by transportation. The 8-day Lower Manaslu Trek delivers life-long cultural encounters and exciting adventure moments.

Your trekking journey starts from Gorkha Bazaar and then proceeds to Sirandanda, followed by Barpak and Laprak, before arriving at Nambai Kharka, where you experience different terrains among Gurung cultural aspects. Exciting viewpoints of Ganesh Himal, Himalchuli, and Manaslu greet you while you walk across dense rhododendron forests across high ridges. The trekking expedition reveals traditional villages, friendly residents, and several wildlife species, including langurs, barking deer, and Himalayan monals. A trekking adventure includes regular hill climbing, forest trails, and long-distance journeys.

At Dharche Danda, you can experience magnificent mountain views and daily transformations between sunrise and peak observations of distant peaks. From Dharche Danda, the trek descends toward Ghyampesal, where walkers pass through dense vegetation and solitary communities by crossing numerous elevated areas.

The last day of trekking brings both straightforward paths and challenging routes to let you experience quiet areas of the Lower Manaslu region. From Ghyampesal, the trekking adventure will conclude since this place is the starting point for the return journey to Kathmandu.

Your return journey to Kathmandu will take five to six hours on the route of Ghyampesal to Gorkha Bazaar and Mugling and then to Naubise. Your last perception of the landscapes featuring dramatic hills and river valleys will be accompanied by witnessing rural traditional ways of living as you progress toward Kathmandu's urban density. The Kathmandu landscape is unreachably distant through the memories of their mountain experiences, heartwarming moments, and cultural discoveries from the trek. The path concludes with deep satisfaction for nature, reverence toward it, and an intensive desire to conduct additional Himalayan journeys afterward.

What is the best season for the Lower Manaslu Trek?

The best seasons for the Lower Manaslu Trek are Spring (March-May) and Autumn (September-November). These seasons are ideal for a safe and scenic Manaslu Region trek. You'll experience clear skies and stable temperatures with blooming flora and fauna. The trail conditions are well-maintained, dry, firm trails with perfect visibility.

Spring (March- May)b

Spring is one of the best seasons for the Lower Manaslu Trek, offering ideal weather, beautiful greenery, and excellent trail conditions.

Temperature:

  • Lower Altitudes (600m–2000m): 10°C to 20°C during the day, with mild evenings.
  • Higher Altitudes (2000m–3500m): 5°C to 15°C in the day, but nights can drop to -5°C.

Wildlife:

  • Flora: Rhododendrons, Oak, Pine, and Bamboo Forests.
  • Fauna: Himalayan Langurs, Barking Deer, Pheasants, Himalayan Black Bears, and Musk Deer.

Trail Conditions:

  • Little to no rainfall making the trails dry and firm.
  • Well-maintained village paths, stone steps, and forest trails.
  • Safe and accessible suspension bridges with no significant changes in river-swelling issues.
  • Mild snow at higher elevations, but it does not cause much difficulty.

Autumn (September- November)

With stable weather and breathtaking mountain views, Autumn is another excellent 8-day Lower Mustang Trekking season.

Temperature:

  • Lower Altitudes (600m–2000m): 10°C to 22°C during the day, with cool evenings.
  • Higher Altitudes (2000m–3500m): 5°C to 18°C in the day, with nights dropping to -3°C.

Wildlife:

  • Flora: Rhododendrons and golden-hued deciduous trees.
  • Fauna: Himalayan Thars, Red Pandas, Monals, and Mountain Goats.

Trail Conditions:

  • Dry and firm trails with little to no rainfall.
  • Well-defined paths through terraced fields, villages, and forests.
  • Crystal-clear mountain views with the best visibility.
  • No risk of landslides or slippery trails, making it one of the safest trekking seasons.

Why not Monsoon and Winter Season for the Manaslu Trekking?

Monsoon season (June- August) brings heavy rainfall, making the slippery, muddy maths and leech-infested forests. There will be the chance of frequent landslides that can block trails, and swollen trails will make crossing the suspension bridges almost impossible and dangerous. The clouds and rain reduce the scenic experience of watching the beautiful sunrises and sunsets over the mountain tops.

During the Winter (December- February), the temperature drops below -10°C at higher elevations. Due to the heavy snowfall, the trails become difficult to pass, and even the lodges, teahouses, and remote areas close. With that, the fiery snow and air can cause a higher risk of altitude sickness, leading to the death of trekkers like you. There will also be higher chances of avalanches and landslides; therefore, the Monsoon and Winter Seasons are unsuitable for the Lower Manaslu Trek.

What are the available accommodations during the Lower Manaslu Trek?

The available accommodations during the Lower Manaslu Trek also offer teahouses, lodges, and homestay options. The accessible lodging provides trekkers like you comfortable and culturally immersive experiences. In the Manaslu Region, you will feel the warmth of the Gurung people around you and have the chance to become familiar with the local cuisine.

Accommodations at Kathmandu

You will stay at a specially chosen hotel in Kathmandu, a cosy and well-kept three-star establishment in the heart of Thamel, the primary destination for travellers. Hotels consist of:

  • The Ramada Encore Hotel
  • Lo Mustang Hotel
  • Thamel Park Hotel
  • Moonlight Hotel

Teahouses and Lodges option during the trek

  • Found in major trekking villages like Barpak, Laprak, Khorla Besi, and Philim.
  • Offer basic rooms with twin-sharing beds, blankets, and pillows.
  • Dining areas serve traditional Nepali meals (dal bhat, noodles, soups, etc.).
  • Some lodges may have solar-heated showers and limited electricity for charging.

Homestays during the Trek

  • Available in Laprak and Barpak, allowing interaction with the Gurung and Ghale communities.
  • Expect home-cooked meals and simple but warm hospitality.
  • Great for experiencing local traditions, lifestyle, and organic food.

Camping (Optional)

  • For a more off-the-beaten-path experience, some trekkers prefer camping in remote sections.
  • Requires a support crew with tents, food, and cooking equipment.

What are the Food and Beverage options during the Lower Manaslu Trek?

The Food and Beverage options during the Lower Manaslu Trek depend on your chosen accommodations. The Manaslu Region trek is culturally rich, and with that you'll be introduced to the epic local cuisine of the area. Throughout the trek, the teahouses, lodges, and homestays provide you with nutritious meals and warm beverages to maintain energy and hydration. Eating well and staying hydrated ensures a safe and enjoyable trekking experience in the stunning Lower Manaslu region.

Meal Dishes
Breakfast Tibetan Bread, Porridge, Pancakes, Omelet & Toast
Lunch Dal Bhat, Thukpa (Tibetan Noodle Soup), Fried Rice & Chowmein, Sherpa Stew
Dinner Dal Bhat, Momo (Dumplings), Roti with Curry
Hot Beverages Black/Milk Tea, Ginger Tea, Hot Lemon & Honey, Butter Tea
Cold Beverages Mineral Water, Filtered Water, Fresh Juice, Soft Drinks

Why No Alcohol & Smoking?

  • Alcohol causes dehydration and increases the risk of altitude sickness (AMS).
  • Smoking reduces oxygen levels in the blood, worsening breathing at high altitudes.
  • Both can lead to fatigue, nausea, and dizziness, making trekking more difficult.

What are the Toilet and Bathroom Facilities during the 8 days of the Lower Manaslu Trek?

Toilet and bathroom facilities during the Lower Manaslu Trek are simple, and their availability depends on both altitude levels and the established infrastructure within local villages. Ascending to higher altitudes means preparing for more basic facilities, especially when entering sparsely populated areas.

Toilets

  • Lower Altitudes (600m–2000m)

The lower altitude areas host teahouses and lodges with squat toilets and occasional Western facilities, yet these toilets might often be in poor maintenance states. At smaller settlements, outside locations usually contain pit toilets. The distances to toilets from teahouses are short, but hygiene supplies such as toilet paper and soap may not be available at all these locations. The best practice when using these facilities is to pack personal toilet paper supplies while having hand sanitizer and wet wipes to maintain hygiene.

  • Higher Altitudes (2000m–3500m)

The higher you climb, the more primitive the available bathroom services will be. Every place usually provides pit toilets with ground openings or simple outside facilities. When visiting elevated locations, it is essential to pack your personal toilet paper and practice proper waste management by using a plastic bag for disposal. Bathrooms in these locations exist in minimal conditions that provide little privacy and operate without a running water supply.

Bathroom and Shower Facilities

  • Lower Altitudes (600m–2000m)

Hot water showers exist in lower elevation teahouses and lodges, and they typically receive power from solar, gas, or wood stove systems. The additional payment allows trekkers to take much-needed showers through facilities that offer these services as an optional expense. The bathroom facilities of specific accommodations provide either cold or hot water showers, depending on water availability. It is important to verify these options before using the showers.

  • Higher Altitudes (2000m–3500m)

Higher points on the trek present showers, which become progressively simpler. Powered showers are rare in isolated villages, and these locations provide no water facilities. During the cold altitudes, you will only have shower access to cold water while using shared water buckets or local rivers for washing. Most trekkers decide against bathing when reaching the upper altitudes because of the frigid weather and the scarce water supply.

Itinerary of Lower Manaslu Trekking - 8 Days

Day 1 : Drive from Kathmandu to Gorkha Bazaar

Drive Route: Kathmandu → Thankot → Naubise → Galchhi → Mugling → Abu Khaireni → Gorkha Bazaar

The first day is a continuous 5-6 hour journey, 140 kilometers from Kathmandu to Gorkha Bazaar. The trip commences from Kathmandu to Thankot. You can expect moderate traffic during busy times. The main highway, Prithvi, presents magnificent Trishuli River valley views along its winding road paths during your trip from Naubise. Landslides occur sporadically in the area stretching from Mugling to this region because of heavy monsoon rainfall. The route starting from Mugling creates a continuous journey that leads to Abu Khaireni while traversing engaging rural sceneries with agricultural terraces. The path begins at Abu Khaireni by combining compacted and imperfect pathways that progress to elevated elevations on the way to Gorkha Bazaar.

During this journey, you will encounter magnificent views encompassing the bright Trishuli and Marshyangdi Rivers, lush vegetated hills, and snowy Himalayan peaks. When traveling through various rural areas of Nepal, you can see local houses and paddy fields, while mountain forests become visible at different settlements in the Nepalese countryside. During your journey, you stand a substantial opportunity to spot wildlife, including langur monkeys leaping between trees and rhesus monkeys. At the same time, numerous bird species reside in the area, including Himalayan griffon vultures and kingfishers.

You can see the historical Gorkha Durbar from an elevation of 1,135 meters, viewing it across Gorkha bazaar before conquering its ridge destination. Gorkha Durbar is an old palatial fortress complex demonstrating King Prithvi Narayan Shah's unification of Nepal. From this location, you can observe Himalchuli while Manaslu and Ganesh Himal stand in the distance. Gorkha Bazaar is an ideal base for Lower Manaslu trekking because it maintains a traditional local-style neighborhood and liveliness through markets and welcoming people.

Day 2 : Trek from Gorkha Bazaar to Sirandada

Trek Route: Gorkha Bazaar → Kalikasthan → Ghyampesal → Sirandanda

Walking the 15 km from Gorkha Bazaar to Sirandanda takes 6 to 7 hours. Stone steps at the end of Gorkha Bazaar guide you on the trek, gradually leading you through dense Sal forests and agricultural terraces. An increasing elevation brings improved air quality with noticeably diminished environmental background noises. The hiking destination Kalikasthan rests on a ridge that reveals Himalchuli at 7,893 meters and Ganesh Himal at 7,422 meters.

From Kalikasthan, the hiking path climbs further towards Ghyampesal, where limited teahouses allow trekkers like you to relax while tasting local cuisine. The route travels through agricultural areas where travelers can see how inhabitants live in traditional Gurung houses. You'll follow a picture-perfect ridge that provides breathtaking views across rolling hills while the distant mountains remain snow-capped.

The trail presents breathtaking views of forests that contain rhododendrons, chir pine, and oak trees as its primary members. The trail becomes vibrant during spring because numerous rhododendron plants display red and pink flowers along its path. The Ganesh and Manaslu mountains stand majestically in view from their positions in the distant skyline when the day is clear. Because of their vibrant plumage, you can observe barking deer among the trees and notice Himalayan monals (Danphe), Nepal's national bird. Seeing a red panda requires luck since this area's population is minimal. Sirandanda is an excellent rest spot to breathe clean mountain air before proceeding.

Day 3 : Trek from Sirandanda to Barpak

Trek Route: Sirandanda → Deurali → Barpak

Traveling from Sirandanda to Barpak takes 12 kilometers by path, typically consuming 5 to 6 hours. When starting from Sirandanda, the descent enters thick rhododendron, oak, and pine forests. The walking path provides simple and secure passages throughout the route until specific sections turn muddy. You can reach Deurali from the trail, where you will appreciate outstanding mountain panoramas from this small, elevated settlement in every direction.

The trek descends from Deurali into Barpak, where you reach the starting point of the Barpak area trek in this Gurung settlement. The path to Barpak village runs through carefully tended agricultural terraces while passing stone buildings and well-built footpaths. The path will offer safe conditions, but you must remain alert for the sections with challenging, rough terrain and uneven surfaces.

Different trekking segments reveal stunning views of the Manaslu mountain range and the Himalchuli and Ganesh Himal peaks. This path reveals a breathtaking sight of rhododendron forests during spring, which creates a stunning visual display. Animal sightings are common in this route since barking deer, langurs, Himalayan griffon vultures, and Danphe (Himalayan monal) birds can be observed. The peaceful lifestyle of the Gurung people can be experienced in Barpak village, where you can observe their traditional culture. All peaks surrounding this location provide delightful views of the place.

Day 4 : Trek to Laprak

Trek Route: Barpak → Basukang → Laprak

Trekking for 5-6 hours will cover the 10-12-kilometer distance from Barpak to Laprak. The journey descends from Barpak, leading to fields containing flat and mountainous areas with numerous small settlements. From Basukang comes the peaceful village located before reaching Laprak. During this scenic trek, you will walk down various tracks where woods envelop you, and different natural attractions will appear along the way. Several forest species harmonize to create an attractive natural environment in this area through genetic combinations of rhododendrons and pine and oak trees.

The viewing journey includes two notable mountain regions, Ganesh Himal and Manaslu. The trek shows its most spectacular views, visible on clear weather days. This territory is a natural home for barking deer, langurs, and the occasional sighting of the Himalayan tahr wild goat. The Himalayan griffon vulture co-inhabits the trekking route alongside the national bird of Nepal, the Himalayan monal. The natural wildlife elements provide scenic beauty to the trek and establish an authentic immersion in nature.

The welcoming atmosphere in Laprak is a first-hand experience where you feel the love from the local inhabitants from different cultures.

This village's local Gurung traditional customs draw recognition from all across the region, so you can witness how the people in this region live. From the peaceful town of Laprak, you can view all the surrounding mountains and relax before continuing your journey.

Day 5 : Trek to Nambai Kharka

Trek Route: Laprak → Myas Bhanjyang → Nambai Kharka

A trek between Laprak and Nambai Kharka takes 5 to 6 hours to complete the 12 kilometers. People who start their hike at Laprak encounter extended terrain changes before reaching the small mountain villages on steep slopes. Travelers who walk this route should exercise caution because stones cover its surface.

The small mountain pass Myas Bhanjyang can now be found in this area. Moving toward Nambai Kharka, you can see stunning views of the Manaslu and Ganesh Himal ranges. The initial descent of the track leads to Nambai Kharka at its maximum elevation point. The pass runs through the forest wilderness, which provides a view of rhododendron pine trees and oak forests on the sides. The springtime blooming of rhododendrons across surrounding landscapes produces stunning visual displays because of their crimson and pink flowers.

Many peaks become visible throughout the hike, although the Manaslu range extends far before you, and the Ganesh Himal peak is the highest prominent background peak. This particular territory harbors barking deer alongside langurs, flying Himalayan griffon vultures, and other wildlife. The empty pathways of the hiking trail provide the perfect environment for nature activities since they ensure complete mental serenity.

Nambai Kharka is a tranquil grazing spot that offers spectacular mountain scenery suitable for resting. It is a complete relaxation area that is an excellent stopping place before continuing your trekking journey.

Day 6 : Trek to Dharche Danda

Trek Route: Nambai Kharka → Somdang Danda → Dharche Danda

To reach Dharche Danda, you'll need five to six hours and must traverse 10 to 12 kilometers from Nambai Kharka. The trail departs from Nambai Kharka before advancing through woodlands during a continuous climb to the open grasslands. The unique trail path needs close attention since its rocky terrain requires proper navigation.

The summit of Somdang Danda provides visitors with spectacular views across the nearby mountains and valleys. The path extends from Somdang Danda to reach Dharche Danda. The trek section involves a combination of challenging conditions because spectacular views from the Manaslu range and nearby peaks emerge against the steep slopes.

This area involves traveling between forested and open spaces decorated with pine trees and rhododendrons along the walking corridor. Springtime visits to the rhododendron blossoms allow you to observe their spectacular color distribution throughout the trekking path. Because mountain weather conditions frequently change rapidly, people acquire plans involving frosty temperatures and quick downpours.

Spectacular geological elements appear throughout the remote territory in the form of pointy mountain peaks, rugged valleys, and diverse wilderness areas. Your journey will allow you to see langurs and barking deer and watch the spectacular display of Himalayan griffon vultures. You will experience greater satisfaction during the trek because of its calming atmosphere and refreshing mountain air, though it demands effort from your body.

The vantage point stretches Dharche Danda and offers a stunning view of the natural landscape. The site maintains a relaxed ambiance so that you can view the surroundings before moving forward. The natural serenity of this village creates an ideal environment for enjoying nature and getting ready to hike the following day.

Day 7 : Trek to Ghyampesal

Trek Route: Dharche Danda → Tallo Thotneri → Ghyampesal

Traveling from Dharche Danda to Ghyampesal, a distance of 10 to 12 kilometers, takes 5 to 6 hours. The trail transitions from Dharche Danda through wooded forest areas until it uncovers cultivated land. Safety interventions are required on the stone trail due to its trackable nature and challenging path, which needs to be secured.

Tallo Thotneri positions itself at the lowest elevation point compared to every other valley attribute. The trail climbs from forested mountainsides until it achieves its maximum elevation point. Rest at this stopping point before setting out toward Ghyampesal.

Every adventurer who starts from Tallo Thotneri will confront a climbable slope leading to Ghyampesal. You can spot Ghyampesal throughout extended distances because the location offers spectacular viewpoints of far-off mountain peaks set against deep valleys and thick forest areas. When spring appears, the track becomes a solid mass of rhododendron forests that connect oak and pine tree woodlands.

During this trek, you must climb two peaks that bridge the areas between Manaslu and Ganesh Himal. You also have the chance to observe langurs, barking deer, and different species of birds. The route leads through an area offering delightful natural conditions and fresh air.

Ghyampesal Village serves as your final resting point. After completing your hikes, you can relax in the town because its natural tranquility creates perfect conditions for rest before continuing your journey. You should choose this spot as it delivers perfect eating venues and satisfactory accommodations.

Day 8 : Drive back to Kathmandu

Drive Route: Ghyampesal → Gorkha Bazaar → Mugling → Kathmandu

When returning to Kathmandu, the route commences at Ghyampesal. The paths that depart from Ghyampesal extend for 140 kilometers, requiring a travel time between 5 and 6 hours. You’ll descend from Ghyampesal toward Gorkha Bazaar as they move through numerous residential areas and agricultural fields. Moderate road damage affects sections of this travel because of steep terrain, while the rest of the journey remains visually appealing.

The primary Mugling route begins at Gorkha Bazaar after you pass through while the Trishuli River stays on your right view. The path presents beautiful natural hill views alongside the calming Trishuli River, but its roads become rough during rainy conditions. From Mugling to Kathmandu, the travel route grows smoother because of the improvements in the new road surface when you pass through Abu Khaireni and Naubise. You will encounter increasing traffic flow near Kathmandu following your peaceful trekking experience.

The trip's ultimate destination is Kathmandu, where you'll find solace. Yeti Hikes wants to convey sentiments about the ending of our shared travel experience after experiencing this majestic journey hand in hand. The lovely memories you made on your trek will forever stay with us because they carry the same value for us that they do for you. Physical and Mental Preparation for the Lower Manaslu Trek

The Lower Manaslu Trek requires physical and mental stability. The difficulty level is moderate, but sudden emergencies can exhaust the journey. It is an adventurous journey requiring physical fitness and mental strength. Trekkers must have a positive mental attitude and the confidence to complete the designated excursion.

How do you physically prepare for the trek?

  • Cardiovascular Training: To improve your stamina, exercise regularly, like jogging, cycling, and swimming.
  • Strength Training: You'll need to walk up and downhill for days, so focus on leg length strength. Strong legs and core muscles will help you maintain balance on the stone-paved paths.
  • Flexibility and Mobility: Keep your muscles loose to reduce the risk of injury. For flexibility and mobility, try yoga or dynamic stretching exercises.

How do you mentally prepare for trekking in Nepal?

  • Develop Mental Resilience: You need to prepare for the long days of walking. There will be many challenging parts; therefore, you must remain positive. Developing mental resilience will help you and your group move forward positively toward the destination.
  • Prepare for isolation: The trekking route is remote, with little interaction with childhood friends and families. Therefore, you need to prepare yourself for stretches of isolation.
  • Be Flexible: You need to be mentally flexible to handle all emergencies. Things or the itinerary may not go as planned, and many things can go wrong, like weather delays and other unforeseen challenges. You need to be flexible enough to adapt to all unplanned scenarios.
