What are the Toilet/ Bathroom facilities during the Khopra Ridge Trek?
During the Khopra Ridge Trek, Toilet and Bathroom facilities may vary depending on the altitude levels and the teahouses. Down the high altitude, most teahouses provide small but conveniently built attached bathrooms with water supply. But even where accommodation is highly rudimentary at high altitudes, you can use bucket water and shared squat latrines in a typical teahouse.
Lower Altitudes (Below 3,000 m / 9,843 ft)
- Toilets: The available toilets, whether Western-style or squat toilets, can be essential. The facilities are generally cleaner, and the water supply is sufficient.
- Bathrooms: Hot showers, either solar or gas-heated, are available at an extra cost. However, simple shower options are available, such as a bucket of water and not more than that.
Higher Altitudes (Above 3,000 m / 9,843 ft)
- Toilets: The facilities are more straightforward because of the toilets and simple pit toilets. Due to limited resources, cleanliness can decline, requiring manual bucket flushing.
- Bathrooms: Shower options are scarce. Available bathrooms often offer cold showers. Some places might offer a bucket of water for a shower, and you cannot expect further comfort.
If you're trekking at higher altitudes, you must expect less comfort and be prepared for limited facilities. Carry some products to maintain hygiene, such as wet wipes, sanitizer, etc.
The circuit trek is remote and rugged, so be prepared for basic and sometimes less-than-ideal conditions.
How secure is it to go on 8 days Annapurna Khopra Danda Trek?
The Annapurna Khopra Danda journey is typically safe, with a well-established and safe trekking route. However, you should be mindful of the hazards and difficulties that come with it.
Below is a summary of some of the adventure's safety features:
- Well-marked routes: Because the trekking trails are well-maintained and established, you can explore safely. Numerous tea houses and lodges are along the route as evidence of the well-marked and often travelled paths.
- Altitude and Acclimatization: As the elevation increases, your body must adjust. The journey's highest point requires proper acclimatization to reduce the danger of altitude sickness.
- Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS): As altitude rises, so does the danger of altitude sickness. Anyone might be affected by AMS at high elevations. If we increase elevation quickly, our bodies won't have enough time to adapt to the temperature, so we must take precautions.
- Physical Fitness and Health: The route involves long days of walking for several hours, which requires little to no physical exertion. However, you must be ready for the trail's potential roughness and combination of ascent and descent.
- Weather and Conditions: Our Yeti Hikes crew recommends you go in the spring and autumn. Because the weather might change quickly, you should also be ready for any unexpected snowfall or rain. You should constantly check local weather reports for the best time to travel because landslides and avalanches might endanger your life.
- Guides and Porters: We at Yeti Hikes pair you with knowledgeable guides and porters for your protection. The guides have received training and expertise in this area. As a result, you must have faith in us, our guides, and our porters. You should also be honest about any AMS symptoms or difficulties while travelling.
- Emergency Evacuation: The entire 8-day period could lead to unintended crises. First-aid supplies and local medical facilities can treat minor wounds. However, emergency evacuation is required during a critical medical emergency. Since it is challenging to evacuate you via roads, the only viable option is to use a helicopter.
Since this helicopter evacuation can cost several thousand dollars, Travel Insurance is strongly advised to cover the costs—it can even partially cover the expense!
How can Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) be prevented during the Khopra Ridge Trek?
Acute Mountain Sickness can be prevented with gradual ascent and proper acclimatization. Before that, you need to know about the common symptoms of AMS.
The symptoms of AMS are as follows:
- Headache.
- Nausea and Vomiting.
- Dizziness.
- Fatigue.
- Loss of Appetite.
- Difficulty in Sleep.
- Increase in Heart Rate.
- Swelled Body Parts.
You should never neglect the symptoms because it can lead to life-threatening conditions and complications such as High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) or High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE).
Some of the preventive measures of AMS are:
- Proper Acclimatization.
- Stay Hydrated.
- Balanced Nutrition.
- Avoid Over-eating.
- Good Rest and Sleep.
You should also contact your nearby fellows and your guide immediately if you notice any symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Day 2 : Trek To Dobato
Trek Route: Tadapani → Isharu village → Meshar → Dobato (3,350 m/ 10,991 ft)
The second day of the trek starts an easy hike through the woods of both rhododendrons and oaks as you proceed out of Tadapani. As you walk, the trail has trees overhead, and you will often hear the twittering of birds and the movement of leaves. There is traditionally a village known as Isharu, a small glade in the middle of the woods, where you can take a short rest with a cup of tea and or juice after about one one-hour journey. The dense vegetation is dominated by moss on trees, and occasionally, it glances through the trees to the horizon.
From Isharu, the trek proceeds to Meshar, a scenario point from which to view the surrounding valleys and the terracing hills. From here, it gradually becomes steeper up to Dobato, a popular stopover area because of the spectacular views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. It is a nice place to sit back, have tea and watch the beautiful Himalayas.
You're at your day's destination, Dobato Village, a small settlement renowned for its tranquil environment. Leave your bags behind at the teahouse and take a quick walk to Muldai Viewpoint in the evening at Dobato to witness a breathtaking sunset over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri hills. Enjoy a hot meal in the teahouse while chatting with other hikers, such as Tibetan bread or dal bhat. While taking in the peace of this quiet mountain community, you can also unwind and make plans for the walk the following day. That kind of atmosphere is great for relaxing after the day hiking. The place is serene and calm. When the sun sets, the night is clear, and stargazing blankets the night sky, making the end of the day the best send-off to the day.
Day 3 : Trek To Sistibung
Morning Sunrise:Â Mulde Hill (45 mins hike)
Trek Route: Dobato → Bayeli Kharka → Lower Chistibung → Sistibung (3,460 m/ 11,350 ft)
On the morning hike to Mulde Hill, the trail passes through rhododendron forests and alpine meadows alongside sights of the Himalayan peaks. Hiking trails rise moderately so that you experience a gentle climb in an atmosphere of peaceful nature. The Mulde Hill location provides a beautiful sunrise with magnificent 360-degree mountain panorama views between the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, and Nilgiri ranges. Standing at the summit, you experience unforgettable moments because typical peaks and surrounding terrain transform into radiant golden mountains during sunrise. After spending some time watching the sunrise, you'll then retrace your step to Dobato.
After a warm breakfast, you'll start your journey from Dobato. The following day's track leads you through a lovely wooded road with sporadic clearings that provide views of the nearby snow-capped summits. As you get closer to Bayeli, a tiny rest area perfect for a quick break, the path progressively changes into broad alpine meadows. Before continuing your journey, you can appreciate the tranquil atmosphere and the views of the mountains here.
The vegetation becomes a little thinner as you start by gradually climbing up from the grasslands of Bayeli Kharka. Most of the trial has grasslands and few patches of the subalpine Rhododendron, indicating the extent of the plains, which are accented by the steeply rising hills and deep dales. After about two hours of hiking, you get to Lower Chistibung, an open meadow that herders use as a temporary home for their animals during warmer times of the year. It is a good place to relax and enjoy the lovely scenery. After a long day of hiking, you can relax in the calm and beautiful evenings at Sistibung. Surrounded by far-off peaks and alpine meadows, the settlement's serene atmosphere makes it the ideal place to unwind. Savor a substantial teahouse dinner consisting of Nepali cuisine like dal bhat and hot beverages to combat the evening chill.
Day 4 : Trek to Khopra Danda/ Ridge and Exploration
Trek Route: Sistibung → Upper Chistibung → Khopra Danda (3,660 m/ 12,008 ft)
Following your morning meal, you’ll continue your journey. The track climbs to Upper Chistibung, another high-altitude grazing ground in the valley. The trail provides scopes to see some kinds of animals like Himalayan thar and some varieties of birds like the pheasants. From here, the landscape starts getting alpine, with fewer trees and more vast space than other Himalayan landscapes.
With a gradual rise, you’ll reach Khopra Danda – a ridge at 3,660 m/ 12,008 ft. The views get progressively more spectacular the higher you go, with some of the best scenes overlooking the Kali Gandaki Gorge, one of the world's ten deepest gorges, and the gigantic mountains of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, and Nilgiri. The ridge can be somewhat satisfying and majestic or breathtaking depending on the expanse of the Himalayas once you are standing on it.
Khopra Danda is rather famous for its stunning view and quietness. If you traverse the ridge, there are several lodges with small accommodations where you could spend some time and have a breathtaking view of the mountains, especially during sunset. Additionally, this trek doubles up as the starting point of the Khayer Lake trek for those wanting to carry on with another adventure. The day is topped with the beautiful view of the snowy mountain slowly turning into silver by the starlight, which makes it a big plus.
Day 5 : Day Hike To Khayar Lake - Khopra Danda.
Trek Route: Khopra Danda → Upper Pastures → Shrines → Khayar Lake (4,500 m/ 14,764 ft) → Back to Khopra Danda
The trekking to Khayar Lake is carried out early in the morning to follow the good weather conditions and enough hours for the return trip. From here, the trail gradually rises through the alpine meadows up to the Upper Pastures and then to the Alpine Pastures, where cows and yaks take their natural feed during the summer. With increased altitude, vegetation is scarce, and one occasionally comes across huge rocks and some snow.
A little farther along the trail, some shrines and landmarks are thought to be significant by indigenous individuals. These are marked with prayer flags and offerings and are very pious in the middle of the barren terrain. The sound of water falling some distance away forms good background music as you follow the trail on the steep slopes.
The last few kilometres of the road up to Khayar Lake are steep, but the effort is worth seeing this beautiful alpine glacial lake at an elevation of 4,500 m/ 14,764 ft. Khayar Lake has always been deeply spiritual, with its pristine turquoise waters, mountainous environment, and eerie beauty. For inhabitants, the lake is considered a holy water that people come to practice, most notably in January, along the Janai Purnima carnival.
After some hours of sightseeing and the gorgeous vista of the lake and mountains, you head back to Khopra Danda. The downward trail provides versatility in viewing the topography, and the sites can be used to re-shoot the shrines and experiment with switching light over the waterfalls. Finally, by evening, you reach the ridgeline at Khopra Danda to retrieve your thoughts entirely revived by the spectacular day trek.
Day 6 : Trek from Khopra Danda to Swanta
Trek Route: Khopra Danda → Upper Chistibung → Lower Chistibung → Forest Trail → Upper Swanta → Swanta Village (2,200 m/ 7,218 ft)
The trail from Khopra Danda starts by retracing the same route through Upper Chistibung, which has alpine meadows changing towards rocky trails and grazing pastures. There is an excellent view of the valley below, and you can still see the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges far away. A brief halt is given at Upper Chistibung before starting the steep descent towards Lower Chistibung, again passing through the pretty area populated during the summer only, which features several terraced slopes.
From Lower Chistibung, the trail splits into a very picturesque forest trail. The descent through the Rhododendron and oak forests is very peaceful. The sun rays are blurred by the leaves and branches overhead, punctuated by bird calls occasionally. While on the trek, there are other small streams and a few waterfalls where you can even take a short break.
As you cross the forest, the trail brings you to Upper Swanta. Here, you can occasionally watch the Indigenous people participate in farming, which will give you a view of how the countryside people of the area live.
The last few kilometres descend to the Swanta Village, a beautiful Magar village located between the hills of cultivated terrains. Moreover, the town is famous for the warm receptions from the locals, the houses built with stones, and some cultural heritage to consider. Swanta is good for relaxation because when you're hiking, the last thing you want to hear is the sound of the streams, and the last thing you want to see is beautiful landscapes. In the evening, they share food with the hospitable local Magar people fascinated by local Magar lifestyles.
Day 7 : Trek from Swanta To Ghorepani (or Hot Spring)
Trek Route: Swanta → Suspension Bridge → Waterfall Trail → Deurali Pass → Lower Ghorepani → Ghorepani (2,874 m/ 9,429 ft)
Alternate Route: Swanta → Chitre → Tatopani (Hot Springs) (1,190 m/ 3,904 ft)
The trek starts with a gentle slope downhill from Swanta Village along the ridge top, with views of fields and streams. Before long, the trail turns into a suspension bridge over a flowing river, a perfect view of the water below. From here, it gets more challenging but with fairly consistent elevation, passing a picturesque waterfall trail with several small waterfalls and beautiful flora.
Once again, you rise and get back in the areas with the formation of several oaks and rhododendrons, providing shade and peace. The trail continues to climb as one approaches Deurali Pass, a ridge offering a natural overlook. In clear weather, you get panoramic views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri's hills, valleys, and snow-capped peaks. The pass is an equally good place to sit back and admire the tapestry of the Himalayan range.
From the Deurali Pass, the trail gently descends through some sections of forests, with the occasional grassy glades that provide more mountain views. After some time, you arrive at Lower Ghorepani, which is not a village but a quarter of the settlement. From here, it is a short climb onwards to Ghorepani. The place is full of life and warmth, with trekking heartlanders involved in the Annapurna circuit.
Ghorepani is at an elevation of 2,874 m/ 9,429 ft, full of hill views and rhododendron forests. The village lies on the popular route across the Ghorepani trek since it is the place from where you can start your trek early in the morning to Poon Hill for the stunning view of the Himalayas. Once you arrive in the village, you can walk around, have a meal, and prepare for the next day.
You can choose an Alternate Route as well, which is from Swanta to Tatopani (Hot Spring). The path from Swanta to Tatopani allows for a beautiful and gentle walk through terraced fields, rhododendron trees, and nearby Magar villages. The trail descends from Chitre to Tatopani, a hamlet renowned for its natural hot springs. The journey's highlight is a soothing dip in the therapeutic hot springs in Tatopani, which relieves any tense muscles after a long day of hiking. The village is a great place to relax because it is quiet and has a few guesthouses that provide simple lodging.
Day 8 : Hike up to Poon Hill & trek to Hile & drive to Pokhara
Hike Route: Ghorepani → Poon Hill (3,210 m/ 10,531 ft) → Back to Ghorepani
Trek Route: Ghorepani → Banthanti → Nangethanti → Ulleri → Tikhedhunga → Hile
Drive Route: Hile → Pokhara
The final day of the trek starts as early with a dawn trek to Poon Hill, probably the most popular vantage point in the Annapurna massif for a sunrise. The walking track from Ghorepani to Poon Hill is well-tarred, and it usually takes one hour to do the hike. The excitement increases with every ascend, and once you reach the top, you get this bird's eye view of the Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Machhapuchrhe, and Nilgiri range with the golden hue of the morning on them. The ultimate day starts early with opinions and pictures, and then you head back to Ghorepani for breakfast.
The trek then descends into thick forests of Rhododendron and oak and passes through the pretty Settlement of Banthanti. From here, the trail proceeds to Nangethanti. It is another beautiful centre for a stopover for food within the forest.
Down the slope, the road gets even steeper as you reach Ulleri, a village commemorated by the formation of a series of stone steps and fantastically built slopes. The trail is quite challenging; however, the end product is that you get to embark on a rather scenic view of the valley below. Nestled further down the stone steps, you find Tikhedhunga, a quiet area by the Modi River that provides the gushing water's pleasant sound.
Continuing from Tikhedhunga, the paths become flatter, and you reach HileKharka through small Nepali settlements and paddy fields. The drive brings you back to the comfort and scenic sights of beautiful countryside and wonderful memories of the fantastic and challenging part of the Annapurna circuit.
After the trek, arrive in Pokhara, check your hotel, and unwind. To commemorate the journey's end, you might enjoy dinner by the lake to share stories and recollections with your fellow hikers. We will say goodbye and bon voyage for your next adventure after a lovely, unforgettable, and exciting one. Our next journey together will always be something we look forward to! Rest for the night, excited and nostalgic about the incredible sights and things you have seen.Â
