Nepal Tourism's update on safe travel amid crisis in Nepal after September protest

Nepal has been in a wave of peaceful yet mass protests which have resulted in the temporary movement restriction in certain areas. As a measure to protect the residents and visitors, the Nepal Army has issued prohibition orders and curfew timetables in Kathmandu Valley, as well as with the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) to ensure essential services continue to operate normally.

Current Rules in Kathmandu Valley

The curfew has been lifted, hence, there is currently no lockdown. However, the Nepal Army is still active in the core areas or protest.

Trekking and Travel beyond Kathmandu Valley

Restricted Area Trekking Permits verification has been postponed till Saturday, 14th September 2025. Trekkers with valid permits will only be allowed to move after receiving clearance with the local security officers. Governments have cautioned that people should not travel by road during this season and instead they should consider using flights whenever they can. The Kathmandu-based district security committees will issue more local guidelines to make trekking activities safe and well-managed.

Important Departure Information for Foreign Nationals

All foreign nationals must have a valid visa or an exit permit from the Department of Immigration to depart Nepal.

Effective September 8, 2025:

• Expired visas can be renewed for free at Tribhuvan International Airport upon departure, to help avoid travel disruptions.
• For all other visa extensions or changes, please visit the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu or its Pokhara branch.
